Rocky River series: Beach

Rocky River series: Beach

Three Rivers, Michigan (March 2017)

When I first moved to Three Rivers, I heard about a beach that the city had built along the Rocky River, which didn’t work out because the bacteria levels in the water were always too high from the goose droppings. Years later, I heard that the project was actually abandoned because the dam in the river kept breaking, draining the swimming area. The only reminders of the beach are the border that marked the sandy area, the bathhouse, and a fishing dock that now hovers high above the water level. Muskrats, beavers, and a variety of birds and amphibians inhabit the wetlands that remain.
