Rocky River Series: Mural

Three Rivers, Michigan (March 2017)

In the thirteen years I’ve lived in Three Rivers, I’ve watched this mural on the Pealer Street Bridge progressively fade and flake off. Parts of it have been painted over entirely now because of graffiti. What has always stood out to me about this telling of our history is the lone Indian at the beginning of the timeline, gazing into the past, while most of the white people look forward into the future. In the larger context of Memory Isle Park, the Indian looks out over the Rocky River, which is one of the most popular kayaking routes in our area.
