I can read floors like others read books,
the tile or terrazo or carpet speak volumes.
How much foot traffic has trod past,
if it has rained or snowed.
Heavy things have been moved
or dragged across, or furniture re-arranged?
Floor surfaces will tell all.
The floor reveals to me how much
attention it needs at any given time.
Whether a simple sweep,
or a loving detailed wet-mop.
Perhaps a buffing, or in worst case,
a complete strip and re-wax.
Like a computer user,
the messages I get could mean
a little, or a lot, of physical labor.
So I read the floor message
carefully, but not too close.
