The city of God which will provide light for the nations, will also contain a tree, and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. The whole biblical story, with its specific calling of the people of God, informs [Isaiah 29]: the people of God are the leaves of the trees. We bring the healing. We take on the calling of our saviour, celebrated and awaited this Advent. We are called to fill the hungry with good things, to bring justice where there is manipulation, to see that the ones denied justice are given justice, to lift up the lowly, and to give the meek cause to rejoice. Our role this Advent is to mediate salvation and healing in anticipation of the One who will finally complete the task for us, that we too may no longer be ashamed.
