Sustainable? For who? For me, for you, for us, for everybody? No, I’m fucking not living sustainably. My welfare is dependent on the third world, so I’m still part of a colonial system where my goodies and resources are dependent on people who are less fortunate, because I am part of the western world.

Before she set off on a cross-Atlantic sailing journey, Topology poetry editor Elisabeth Wenger shared a link to the inaugural episode of the video series Rooted in Reason. In this episode, a young filmmaker documents the early years of Hästekasen Gård, near Uddevalla, Sweden, a small farm owned by Sebastian Noslund and worked by a collection of young WOOFers. In the context of this issue’s theme of local government, it’s interesting to see how the worker-residents of the farm negotiate to organize themselves on a small scale within the larger household of nature and geopolitical realities.
