Midland Station in Toronto, Ontario (2009)
I lived in residence when I was in graduate school, which came with a number of blessings. Easily accessible space to be alone with one’s thoughts was not one of them. Very quickly, I found that Toronto’s subway system offered a refuge where I could go to sit and process things in total anonymity. At one point, I started going to the church that was as far away from school as I could go by train, as the hour-and-a-half trip each way gave me as much sanctuary as the service itself. Those were a challenging two years, and looking back, I’m probably one of the few people on earth who is thankful to the Toronto Transit Commission for making life a little more bearable.
