Cody

Cody

This is Cody from the series “The Secret Society of Disabled People.” I created this series to help people understand what it’s like to live with various disabilities. The image of Cody truly represents the epitome of my work. I love creating a work that pushes limits with the topics of disability, sexuality, and classic stereotypes of masculine and feminine roles in society. This image blurs the lines on what it means to be someone with a disability and masculine/feminine roles. Cody is a true-born performer and the passion he exudes through his dance is truly extraordinary. It’s such a natural gift that can’t be taught. While I was photographing Cody I didn’t care to ask what his sexuality was because frankly I don’t think it matters. Far too often we tend to try and figure out why people are interested in certain things, such as why he likes to dance in dresses. The fact is he simply just likes to. No explanation is needed, and Cody, nor anyone else, should have to justify his actions. He is a brilliant young man with an amazing intellectual and creative mind who is redefining what it means to be disabled.
